Tom Wilmott
Preachin' in a language that's completely new.
When I begun making these paintings it was primarily to fulfill a strong and persistent desire to paint in the face of heavily restricted opportunity. I found myself yearning to indulge in the direct physical aspects of painting and to produce paintings, but entirely unable to continue to do so in the way I had been. I realised a complete reassesment of what I wanted to do and what I needed to do was required if I was to achieve anything at all.
The result is a significant distillation of practice and consequently also of completed work in order that the small amount of time I have is used as productively and successfully as possible and that the problems I encounter when making a painting are reduced as far as they can be. Put simply, my primary overriding intention is to enjoy the process as much as possible throughout – from inception, through manufacture to completion of the finished object.
If I had the strength I might pick up my sword and make some attempt to resist.
